During the Edo period, Shinagawa-shuku flourished as the first post town on the Tokaido Highway, offering travelers and locals alike an easy getaway from the bustling city of Edo (present-day Tokyo).
Known as “Southern Shinagawa” in contrast to the famous “Northern Yoshiwara,” the area was lined with teahouses and kashizashiki—private rooms where visitors could enjoy the company of the renowned courtesans of the day.
Today, this historic 2-kilometer stretch of the old Tokaido, still preserved from the Edo era, hosts one of the largest events in Shinagawa Ward, celebrating the rich culture and lively atmosphere that once made the town so famous.
江戸時代、品川宿は東海道往来の宿として、江戸庶民の手軽に行ける観光地として栄えました。
北の吉原に対して南の品川と呼ばれたくらい、きれいどころがずらっと揃っていて、そういう女性方と遊べる貸座敷が軒を連ねていました。
東海道五十三次、日本橋から数えて一番目の宿場町「品川宿」江戸時代から残る約2kmの道で開催される区内最大級のイベントです。
